Popping in real quick to say that Iāve just released the last single off my new album āCreekbed Carter,ā which is coming out March 22!
Thatās right: my most unhinged country song, the one that I canāt even play in some parts of the country, the one that goes through the history of the relic trade in the Catholic church in the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, IS FINALLY HERE!
I wrote this song as a joke for myself. I was always talking about saint facts during my shows anyway, and Iāve spent something like a decade researching relics and their origin stories. Why? I truly donāt know, friend. I donāt always know what compels me to dive into my research rabbit holes. But growing up Catholic, you end up learning a lot of weird history that just sits in a corner of your brain, waiting to get used. Now, Iām subjecting the country world to an anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist screed about the great marketing scheme that is the relic trade.
And you GOTTA watch this music video. I swear to God, itās one of the wildest things Iāve ever made. A āPriscilla Queen of the Desertā meets āMonty Python and the Holy Grailā meets Disneyās āRobin Hoodā fantasy. Adeliza Backus-Pace, a friend I met through my best guy Jude Brothers (who makes an appearance here as The Plague), was the perfect director and producer. We filmed it all in the middle of the desert in Albuquerque, the hulking forms of the new Netflix studios visible in the distance. A lot of the cast were friends I made in Santa Fe while on tour last year; some of them frequently star in a queer and trans burlesque troupe called Cirque du So Gay that puts on some of the best DIY shows Iāve ever been a part of. Chad and Sam were total stars as the Pope and the Deacon Stephen, learning every bit of that fast patter breakdown by heart. I hand-painted a nudie suit. The props were disgusting and gory and so, so right. The crew were angels, working hard with kindness and generosity and patience ā even though it was, for many of them, their only day off from work that week. A trailer broke down, but no one was hurt; a truckload of enchiladas were consumed while squatting in the dirt; a coyoteās tracks paved the way; Lane Luper, the Director of Photography, filmed some truly wild quick pans in only a few tries, and we got done filming 2 hours earlier than expected so we popped cheap champagne and drank it out of the back of a truck as the sun set behind the mountainsā¦
THIS MUSIC VIDEOāS GOT LORE, YāALL.
Thatās all Iāll say for now. It would mean the world to me if youād give āThe Relic Songā a listen and a watch and let me know what you think! And if youāre in Austin, save March 21 because Iām doing a big album release blowout at Sagebrush and weāre gonna party tf down!
XOXO, C
